With city expansion, population growth and living standard improvement, the amount of municipal refuse becomes increasing. Landfill leachate is a highly concentrated wastewater of various pollutants which is produced by landfill process. The landfill leachate would heavily contaminate the environment and threaten human’s health. Therefore, finding an effective treatment for landfill leachate is becoming a hot area in China and abroad. As an effective treatment for degrading highly concentrated organic wastewater, catalytic wet oxidation process (CWOP) is widely concerned, especially in landfill leachate treatment. In this research, a CWOP system applying catalyst activated carbon/potassium persulfate was established to treat dissolved organic matters. Hydroquinone was used as a model pollutant in this system to investigate its degradation under different catalyst component dosage, temperature and reaction time. The results showed that10mg activated carbon/10.8mg potassium persulfate under130℃,0.5MPa and2hours could completely degrading hydroquinone with87.10%COD removal rate.9,10-anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonic acid,2-hydroxyl-naphthoquinone, humic acid and fulvic acid are common found matters in landfill leachate. Through experiments, the catalytic system could be well applied to oxidize the above four solutions. All solutions could be almost decolorized and the COD removal rate could reach55.82%,64.27%,71.16%and77.80%respectively.Land leachate contains amounts of dissolved organic pollutants. This research demonstrated that the catalyst activated carbon/potassium persulfate based CWOP has promising developmental future.
