With development of economic and improvement of people’s living standard, personalization and diversification have become the important demands for furniture products. Consumers expect products to meet their own preferences, and hope that the delivery period is short and the cost is low. However, the way of mass production adopted by traditional furniture manufacturing cannot provide variety styles of products, and traditional handmade custom furniture has long lead times and high price, both of which can’t meet customers’needs. Therefore, mass customization production becomes the development trend of modern furniture industry.In this paper, through the analysis of the development status and the domestic application status of mass customization, a model of furniture product design and assembly for mass customization was proposed. Users’ needs were hierarchical decomposed into several indicators that the importance can be evaluated, and the required product features were obtained by these indicators. Product function model was designed and product main function was decomposed into many unit functions which can be corresponded to an independent structural unit. Product structure tree was designed and divided into independent parts which were decomposed into part-level structural units. Through the product function-structure mapping, product features can be mapped to the product structures in order to produce required parts collection.In this paper, an assembly information model for product parts was created to access and modify the parts assembly information. A composite gene encoding contained variety of assembly information was designed, which contained the assembly tools and types of product parts, to avoid frequent switching of the solution space and code space in the evolution of operations. PMX select genetic operator and variation genetic operator were applied to control the process of reproduction, mutation, selection and elimination of the individuals to get the optimal solution for the assembly sequence in the genetic evolution computing.Finally, an instance was given in order to verify the correctness of product design and assembly processes based on product family of mass customization, and improves the feasibility and effectiveness of the present theories and models.
