China is the home of tea and it is believed that tea was first discovered and used byChinese, which later seeped into all aspects of people’s daily life and under the influenceof Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism, evolved into part of Chinese culture. Chinaand Japan are close neighbors and the two peoples have had frequent contacts andfriendly exchanges in politics, economy, religion, arts, culture and other aspects sinceancient times. The tea culture is no exception. The tea culture, along with Zen, wasimported from China to Japan and formed a unique Japanese tea ceremony culturalsystem with the continuous integration. The author finds that there are few comparisonresearches in Sino-Japan tea cultures in5aspects, namely, material carriers, cultureimplications, ideological connotations, inheritance means and folk cultures afterreferring to lots of relevant materials on tea culture research. Hence, the author deems itto have much room to develop this area. Based on the predecessors’ researches,starting from the concept of culture, this study, applying the comparative method,documentation method and other methods, makes a thorough research into historicaldevelopment of the tea culture of the two countries as well as their own characteristicsto further understand the Sino-Japan tea culture. It is conducive not only to the furthercomprehension of two tea cultures but also make efforts to further understand and learnJapanese culture and strenghen the Sino-Japan culture communications.The thesis consists of four parts. The first part discusses the concepts of tea and teaculture. The second part describes the historical development of Sino-Japan tea culturesand analyzes their characteristics in different periods. The third part is the main part ofthis thesis, which makes a comparative study of the similarities and differences ofSino-Japan tea cultures from the following five aspects: material carriers, cultureimplications, ideological connotations, inheritance means and folk cultures. The fourthpart gives a summary of the whole thesis and comes to the conclusion that in thefollowing areas:Firstly, the similarities in Sino-Japan tea cultures lie in the fact that the two teacultures aspire to the combinations between human and nature, the coordinationbetween human and substance and the harmony between people.Secondly, the differences of Sino-Japan tea cultures lies in the purpose oftea-drinking, the subjects involved in the tea cultures and the inheritance as well as thedevelopment means.
