With the development of manufacturing technology, coated carbide inserts with3-D groove were widely used. Their good performance in chip breaking, high hardness and high wear resistance make them are qualified in advanced manufacturing areas, such as high speed cutting, dry cutting, minimum quantity lubrication cutting. Coating and groove structure are the two key points in the research of inserts’cutting performance. Coating’s high hardness, low friction and good performance in high temperature can improve cutting performance and prolong the tool’s life. Groove affect insert’s chip breaking performance and cutting force directly, simultaneously, it is improtant to control the generation and transmission of cutting heat.In this paper, three kinds of turning inserts with different coattings and groove structures were used in the experiment to research the influence of different coating and groove on the cutting performance. Firstly, the binding force, friction coefficient of coating and insert groove profile were measured. Then the cutting force, cutting temperature and tool wear experiment were carried out in the same condition. The features and the compositions of wear micro area of inserts with different coating and groove structure were detected by SEM and EDS, the wear mechanism was analysised. The coefficient of cutting heat flow control ability of inserts was put forward for the first time after the analysis and calculation of the experiment result, this coefficient provide quantitative criteria for inserts control ability on the cutting heat distribution. The research shows that cutting force and cutting temperature were affected by coating and groove structures, which due to different kinds of wear feature and wear mechanism. The research provide evidence for improving the coating process and making rational use of coating, it also provide help for designing the new inserts’groove and the correct selection of inserts’groove in the actual machining process.
