Ferrocene and its derivatives for its unique chemical structure and thus havespecial physical and chemical properties of a wide range of applications in many fields,such as organic synthesis, metal organic chemistry, biology and so on. In recent years,the synthesis and properties of ferrocene and its derivatives are research focus in metalorganic chemical research fields.This article got α-bromo-acetyl ferrocene and1,1’-Bis(α-bromo-acetyl) ferroceneas ferrocenyl atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiator through theferrocene Friedel-Crafts reactions. At the same time the process of reaction wasaccompanied with reductive debromination hydrogenolysis reaction and getdebromination products. Using NMR, FT-IR and HRMS to characterize thecompositions and molecular structure of the Friedel-Crafts reaction products, UV-visspectra for the electronic structure.Friedel-Crafts reaction mechanism of α-bromo-acetyl bromide andα-bromo-propionyl bromide with ferrocene was Discussed, the reaction there were twokinds of reaction process, one was the typical electrophilic substitution reaction to getbromo-acyl ferrocene; and the other was reductive debromination hydrogenolysisreaction to get acyl ferrocene and novel asymmetrically substituted products(1-α-bromo-acetyl-1’-acetyl)ferrocene.Then using the α-bromo-acetyl ferrocene as initiator to initiate styrene monomer’sATRP, obtained ferrocenyl polystyrene with narrow molecular weight distribution.usingNMR, FT-IR and GPC to characterize the polymer’s composition, structure and relativemolecular weight.
