With the rapid development of national economy and information technology industry, the requirements for the manufacturing industry especially machine tool industry are becoming increasingly high. The traditional design methods of machine tool mainly rely on the experience and they not only need a long design cycle but also lack effective theories as guidance. In this paper, the method of structural design based on topology optimization is applied to the structural analysis and optimal design of the typical supporting part. The design process provides a reference for the follow-up research of the structure design of the machine tool’s supporting part.The main research works introduced in this thesis are focused in the following aspects:(1) The mechanical model of the vertical machining center column is established and the typical working conditions are then introduced. On the other hand, research of the boundary conditions of the column under various load conditions and different location conditions are done which provides the basis for structural analysis and design.(2) Software ANSYS is used to finish the column’s structural analysis in three typical location conditions and then the analysis of the result data is carried out in order to find out the weak part. The work above will provides a reference for the column’s structural optimization. The following work is to implement the optimization of the column using the method of structural design based on topology optimization. Topology optimizations of the column under different working conditions and of different optimization objectives are then carried out based on the software HyperMesh, the results of which are analyzed effectively later to build the concept models of the column.(3) The design method of structural optimization based on OptiStruct is applied to the improvement of structural design of the vertical machining center column. According to the main path of force consists of materials left at the end of optimization and the results of the structural analysis, different improvement schemes are put forward and an optimal one will be picked out from them after some comparisons of several performances. Finally, fine design is done to the improved structure of the column and another performance analysis is made after the work. By comparing the analysis result of the final model with that of the original structure, we can see that the mass of the new structure is reduced by7.30%and the stiffness get an improvement of12.68%and with regard to dynamic performance, the first natural frequency is improved by10.13%. The new structure is considered better compared to the original one which suggests that the improvement design acquires a good optimization effect.(4) Finally, the structure design process of typical supporting part for machine tool is summarized and the process verifies its application in the design field of machine tool’s supporting part.
