Color inkjet paper has been widely used at prensent. But chinesesuperior quality inkjet paper mainly rely on imports. Therefore, it isurgent to develop superior quality inkjet paper by ourselves.Alumina pigment particles are small and have wide surface areawhich is ideal for color inkjet paper. But alumina particles’ surface arenegative causing that their dispersion are poor in coatings and havinglow compatibility with other components.It include the following content in this paper. First of all, a cationiccoupling agent TL-3A was used to modify the surface of four differentkinds of alumina. And then, the alumina before and after modificationwere used in the inkjet paper coatings, afterwards we evaluated theperformance of the self-made color inkjet paper to find out whichself-made color inkjet paper were suitable for requirements and todetermine the best modified alumina pigments.We determined that the factors influencing alumina modificationeffects were TL-3A addition(A), modification time(B) and modificationtemperature(C). The best modification conditions were determined viaorthogonal and single factor experiments. The results showed that thebest condition for carbonization alumina was: A, B, C were2.0%,30min,61℃respectively; the best condition for export γ-Al2O3was: A,B, C were2.0%,30min,50℃respectively; the best condition forα-Al2O3was: A, B, C were1.5%,30min,42℃respectively; the bestcondition for hydrous alumina was: A, B, C were1.5%,30min,50℃respectively. We evaluated the modifying effect of four differentalumina with and without modification by scanning electron microscopy.It was found that all the four kinds of alumina’s dispersion propertieshad been improved after been modified.Then we took inkjet base paper and offset paper as coating stock and used unmodified and modified alumina to make color inkjet paper.Afterwards, we comprehensively evaluated the quality of the inkjetpaper by basic properties and printing properties. The basic propertiesdetection index were included brightnees, opacity, smoothness and cobbvalue an so on. It was showed that the export γ-Al2O3was unqualified.The visual detection of printing properties results showed that aluminapigments before modification were all not suitable for color inkjet paper.The application effect of modified α-Al2O3and modified hydrousalumina were better than carbonation alumina or modified exportγ-Al2O3. We use density values and dot gain values as data detection toevaluate the printing properties detection. It was showed that themodified carbonation alumina and modified export γ-Al2O3were onlysuitable for low-grade color inkjet paper, and the modified α-Al2O3andmodified hydrous alumina were suitable for high-grade color inkjetpaper. The quality level of high-end color inkjet paper were differentaccording to coating stock and pigments combination types. The qualitylevel of different types were ordered from high to low as following:modified hydrous alumina with inkjet base paper, modified hydrousalumina with offset paper, modified α-Al2O3with inkjet base paper,modified α-Al2O3with offset paper.In a word, we made high-grade color inkjet paper by modification,coating and detection, and determined that the optimum pigments weremodified α-Al2O3and modified hydrous alumina.
