Metamaterial is an electromagnetic material whose equivalent permittivity and equivalent permeability are negative simultaneously, which has become one of the much-talked-about topics of electromagnetic researches so far. Transmitted waves in metamaterial will behave some marvelous effect in metamaterial compared to traditional materials, such as "negative refraction","reversed Doppler effect","backward wave" and so on. At present most of the researches on metamaterials are conducted on the following aspects:theoretical analysis, constructional design of media unit and the application of metamaterial.On the basis of previous experience, a further research on the application of metamaterial is carried on in this paper. One typical metamaterial structure is applied to the fields of micro-strip antennas, micro-strip antenna arrays, band-stop filters and biomedical engineering.The main work of the paper can be summarized as follows:1) The theoretical foundation of metamaterial is studied in detail. The relevant characteristics and structural design of metamaterial are expatiated. And the reasons why the equivalent permittivity and equivalent permeability of metameterial are negative are also presented.2) Metamaterial is applied to micro-strip antennas. By using the highly-directional radiation principle of metamaterial and metameterial reflecting surface, a micro-strip antenna working at2.47GHz with high gain is designed.3) Metamaterial is applied to micro-strip antenna arrays. The classical metameterial consist of SRR(split ring resonator) arrays is used as a separator, which is placed in the middle of micro-strip antenna arrays of H-plane coupling pattern to reduce the coupling between the antenna units.4) Metamaterial is applied to coaxial filter. At the frequency band in which the sign of the permittivity and the permeability are on the contrary, waveguide is not enabled in metameterial, except for evanescent wave. Filter properties of coaxial filters can be achieved by adjusting the resonance frequency of the metamaterial.5) Metamaterial is applied to the field of biomedical engineering. A hypothesis is propose that metamaterial can make a shielding effect on mobile phone radiation according to the band-stop effect in its single-negative band. And the assumption is validated by simulating.
