This thesis analyses applicability of evaluating the water quality of Qing Riverbasin in Liaoning province based on diatoms index of biological integrity (D-IBI),further, establishes diatom index of biological integrity (D-IBI) and fish index ofbiological integrity (F-IBI) to evaluate the water quality.Investigations were performed on the attached diatoms at12sites in Qing Riverfrom September2009to September2010. Synedra sp., Fragilaria sp., Cymbella sp.,Navicula sp., Diatoma sp. and Melosira sp. were the dominant species. The diatomcommunities were influenced by seasonal changes and the diatom densities weresignificantly different among the sampling sites.Based on Shannon diversity index of diatoms discriminatory criteria,5siteswere considered relatively clean as well as7sites were polluted. Discriminatorypower analysis and Pearson’s correlation analysis on10diatom biological indiceswere performed with SPSS statistical software. The results showed that shannondiversity index of diatoms, percent sensitive diatoms and Pampean Diatom Index(IDP), were finally selected as represents for bioassessment of water quality in theQing River. A score of5,3or1was assigned to every metric for standardization ofthe metrics, and a multimeter on a scale ranging from3to15for diatom index ofbiological integrity (D-IBI). Four levels of discriminatory biocriteria for water qualitywere eventually proposed by quartation:13to15, good;10to12, fair;7to9, slightpoor;3to6, poor. Re-evaluate the12sites and the results were consistent with that ofthe measured water quality indexes such as dissolved oxygen, pH, total phosphorus, total nitrogen, chemical oxygen demand, ammonium nitrogen, biochemical oxygendemand after5days. As a result, D-IBI provided a biocriterion which was suitable forthe assessment of the water quality in Qing River. In July2011, diatoms and fishes were collected from10sites in Qing River, anddissolved oxygen, pH, total phosphorus, total nitrogen, chemical oxygen demand, ammonium nitrogen, biochemical oxygen demand after5days and volatile phenolwere measured as well. During the study, a total of14kinds of diatoms were identified, which were dominated by Cymbella sp., Navicula sp., and Mastogloia sp.,14kinds of fishes were identified, which were dominated by C.granoci Rendahl,M.bipartitus, A.Liaoningensis and B.nuda. Based on comprehensive pollution indexof the water quality discriminatory criteria,7sites were considered relatively clean aswell as3sites were polluted.10diatom biological indices were screened respectivelyto get3diatom biological indexes, shannon diversity index of diatoms, percentsensitive diatoms and Pampean Diatom Index (IDP),14fish biological indices werescreened respectively to get3fish biological indices, i.e. percent of tolerant fishes, percentage of vegetarian fishes and Shannon diversity index of fishes. Scores (5,3, or1) were developed for normalizing the different numerical scales of metrics into asingle score, D-IBI and F-IBI were obtained.10sites were evaluated with D-IBI,theresults of water quality were from slight poor to fair, but the evaluated results ofF-IBI were higher than that of D-IBI, The applicability of F-IBI remained to beinvestigated further in Qing Rive Basin.
