The objective of this study focuses on the optical properties of a verticallynon-uniform ocean. Based on the ocean optical in-situ data collected in East ChinaSeas by Ocean Remote Sensing Institute of Ocean University of China, the opticalvertical structures were classified and parameterized to4types. The ranges of theparameters were also determined. Therefore the dataset of vertically non-uniformstructures in East China Seas was established. Numerical simulations with theHydrolight software and the vertical model developed by Zaneveld were performedby use of this dataset respectively. A comparison between these two methods andbetween Zaneveld’s model and in-situ measurements were made. The correlationcoefficient between Zaneveld’s model and Hydrolight is0.9919and theroot-mean-square error (RMSE) is0.0006; the correlation coefficient betweenZaneveld’s model and in-situ measurements is0.9619and the RMSE is0.0011.Therefore Zaneveld’s model can be applied to the optical remote sensing for the EastChina Seas with a non-uniform vertical structure. The influence of differentparameters of4vertical models on Zaneveld’s model was studied.
