Beach is precious natural resource which nature gives human beings, its attractivescenery can be used as recreation and tourism resource which generates economicbenefits, its special geographical position can block the impact of waves on buildings, farmland and roads to protect human living space. Qingdao is a coastal city, beachtourism is an important part of its tourism industry, which plays an irreplaceable part, but there is widespread erosion on sandy coast at present, the reason of erosion isdifferent so it’s particularly important to grasp the characteristics of beachsedimentary geomorphology and correctly understand beach sedimentary dynamicenvironment and its process and protect them scientifically. We made field survey on25beaches in Qingdao city, and the surveyed coastlineincludes Jiaonan coast, Huangdao coast, Shiqu coast, Laoshan coast, and Jimo coastfrom April2010to December2011. Look up relevant information widely at the earlystage, to master research progress of the study area, select representative profiles ofeach beach to measure and collect surface samples during field survey. To testsamples by grain size experiment, and then analyze the data of grain size experimentsand profile measurements, to master the characteristics of the sedimentarygeomorphology of Qingdao city’s beaches systematically. To establish a beach qualityrating system at last which is based on9sedimentary parameters, beach length, profilelength, berm width, slope, mean grain size, sorting coefficient and so on, obtain therating results, and combine with field surveys to analyze. Understand beach dynamicequilibrium adequately and put forward some suggestions on beach development andprotection. To master the characteristics of beach sedimentary geomorphology moreclearly, we select some beaches to measure and sample repeatedly. Combine thegeomorphic characteristics of beaches, hydrodynamic force, shoreline morphology, the impact of human activities and other factors to analyze the change of characteristicparameters of sediment grain size and profile variation in different periods. Byanalyzing, mainly draw the following conclusions:(1)Most of the surveyed beaches in Qingdao city are headland-bay coast, mostbeaches’ mean grain size range in1~3Φ(0.125~0.5mm),52%beaches’ sorting is medium. The grain size of sediments in Jimo coast and Huangdao coast is finer thanother coasts. The sorting of Jimo coast is the best. The mean grain size of Laoshancoast is finer than Shiqu coast and Jiaonan coast, the mean grain size of the latter twois almost the same.(2)Variation analysis of the surface sediments in the First Bathing Beach, theSecond Bathing Beach, the Third Bathing Beach and Shi Laoren Bathing Beach showsthat there is significant change of beach sediments by different wind and wavefunctions in April and October. The grain size in October is generally thinner than inApril, and most of the sorting is getting better.(3)The geomorphic characteristic of each investigated beach is obviouslydifferent. There are15beaches with average length of profile measurement longerthan100m. The average length of Huangdao coast’s beach profile is138m which isthe longest, while Laoshan coast is106m which is the shortest. The average slope ofJiaonan coast is the biggest (5.4%), and it’s the smallest in Jimo coast (2.3%). UseRMAP software to make quantitative analysis of3fixed profiles’ seasonal variationsin Shi Laoren Bathing Beach, its profile shape is basically stable.(4)Among the score of rating for the25beaches, in100point scale,52%ofthem get70~85(good),28%of them get60~70(medium),the beaches which getscore higher than85(excellent) and lower than60(poor) are respectively12%and8%,which shows that general status of the investigated beaches is good. The beacheswhich get higher scores(≥87)are Beach SDQD-010in Huangdao coast, BeachSDQD-014in Laoshan coast and Beach SDQD-018in Jimo coast.
