Due to earth poor water-resistance, the main influence factor to the earthen sites outside is rain, especially the sides in the humid environment which could be disappeared by the rain. There haven’t been mature protective materials, most of which are still in experimentation and not put into practice. Many surveys show that there are many plants, such as herbaceous plants, trees, shrubs and music, on the sides in the humid environment and they play a good role to protect the sides from the rain. According to this, making use of plants to protect sides which are covered by plants are proposed besides physical and chemical methods. Plants have both beneficial and adverse effects on sides, so we need to study the beneficial effects to proved the feasibility of protecting earthen by plants. The study makes use of the achievements of Geotechnical Engineering, Slop Engineering, NEC Engineering and Botany, and consulting literatures, field survey, and analysis. Taking the sides locating in the region with the average annual rain bigger than300mm, the study analyses the feasibility of making use of plants to protect sides, the effects of plants on the sides, and estimates whether the plants are good for the sides’conservation in long time. Some results are proposed through study:1st, the thought of making use of plants to protect earthen sides is proved feasible though applying on the Luoyang ancient city of Han and Wei dynasty, Qin Tomb, Mao Ling Han, Du Ling Han, although it hasn’t been put into practice widely.2nd, there are3conditions of application. The first one is there are plants one the sides and they play good roles in protecting sides. The second one is the sides’conservation is influenced by rain mainly. The third one is other protect methods are not mature, such as consolidating sides by chemical materials.3rd, there are3factors should be considered when pick up the plants. The first one is the type of the sides. For example, trees and shrubs could be used to protect grave mound while herbaceous plants could be used to protect walls as well as the bryophyte could be used to protect the sides collapsed to slop. The third one is the benefits and landscapes of plants could be considered at the same time.4th, there are some common characters of the plants protecting walls. The first one is most of the plants are herbaceous ones who have shallow roots and big coverage. The second one is the plants are low and the height is similar. When the characters are met, the negative aspect of plants is bigger than the adverse ones to the sides.5th, there are some common characters of the plants protecting grave mound. The first one is there are trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants, the height of which is clear. Three kinds of plants cooperated with each other to protect sides best.6th, the herbaceous plants could be chose from4aspects. The first one is the roots are shot than70cm. The second one is the height is lower than50cm. The third one is perennial. The forth one is the plants don’t have other effects such as medical. According to these, Leymus chinensis, Agropyron cristatum, Festuca rubra, Iris lactea, and Japanese Inula flower are picked up. These plants have beneficial effects bigger than the adverse ones on the sides, as a result, they could be chose to protect sides.
