Isotropic material is one research focus of electromagnetism, optics and materials science. Because of its unique physical properties, isotropic material receives widespread attention. As we all know, electromagnetic parameters determine the electrical and magnetic properties of the medium. It has very important significance to retrieve electromagnetic parameters to describe and evaluate the properties of isotropic material.The first part of this thesis has a research on the construction of isotropic material and the electromagnetic response characteristics in the incident electromagnetic wave. On the base of the Maxwell equation, theoretical derivation of negative refractive index negative permittivity is conducted.Then a detailed analysis of long metal Rods and SRRs is derived to get the principles of negative permittivity and negative permeability.The third part introduces the retrieval methods of isotropic material’s electromagnetic parameters. This part is based on classical electromagnetic theory and equivalent circuit theory. The mathematical model of the S-parameter retrieval method and transmission line theory is established.The fourth part is this thesis’s emphasis. It simulates the isotropic material model by CST. The electromagnetic parameters are retrieved from scattering parameters. This thesis also calculates the DNG model, symmetric ring model and symmetric Z-metal. Depth study of the significance of the negative permittivity and negative permeability is also conducted.
