This paper investigates the relationship between Rachel Carson and the environmental movement inthe contemporary era. In this study, scanning the severity of environmental problem from various aspects, and its impact of people’s perception and actions, which exposed profoundly by the book Silent Spring, this paper expounds and proves that the effect of Silent Spring to the rise of environmental movement inthe contemporary era is decisive. Her masterpiece Silence Spring is a milestone in the world’senvironmental protective movement. Using acute vision and rational deduction, a female particularlyowing, she reveals the objective reality of “horror gohst’—the environmental pollution and ecocide, whichproduced by the prosperous industried society, and rings the alarm bell to the government, industry circlesof various countries, even the people of the whole world, and triggers the environmental protectivemovements from America to the whole world. This article consists of three parts, introduction, text and conclusion. The introduction introduce background and significance, research ideas and research methods, andanalysis the current research situation in detail both home and abroad. The text is divided into three chapters. In the first chapter, it elaborates the story of Rachel Carson’slifetime, the problems she suffered before and after the writing and publish of her work, Silence Spring, and the analysis of the background in that time. In the early time after the publish of Silence Spring, itaroused quite a stir in the whole America, and made every person take part in the discussion. Industry andcommercial circles, profit apartments and governmental agents slammed fiercely against this, while Rachel Carson persisted to make people believe that the environmental problem is more critical day by day, andonly by being harmonious with environment, can we human being live a better life.In the second chapter, it labors the profound environmental problem exposed by Rachel Carson’sbook, Silence Spring. It analysis from two aspects: organic environment and inorganic environment. On theinorganic environment, it mainly discusses the damage to water resource and soils caused by advancedtechnique and chamicals produced by industrial civilisation. On the organic environment, it elaboratesfrom the effect to all the plants animals, and human beings and its offsprings, and proves that usingchamicals unlimited can affect all living beings profoundly. Why spring is so silence? As a result ofabusing insecticide under industrial civilisation, more and more plants and animals are dying out, biological diversity is becoming smaller sharply, and the evironment is destroyed even worse. At present, air pollution and resource starvation has made people pay more and more attention to the relationshipbetween human and natrue. Rachel Carson is the blasting fuse who aroused people’s discussion andattention. As a female, she wrote the masterpiece Silence Spring in a delicate and acute vision. In fact, shegave people a warning sign that silence means death. In the third chapter, it states the response of society and the whole world, after the publish of RachelCarson’s Silence Spring. People attached great importance to environmental problem, which changed theirthoughts and actions significantly. Since then, the environmental movement in the contemporary era beganto spring up, which opened the true so-called environmental protective movement. After that, theenvironmental movement is growing even stronger, and has great impact all over the world. Conclusion analysis the early environmental movement and the environmental movement in thecontemporary era, although both have coherence but there is essential difference. It is Silent Spring makehuman from resources protection to environmental protection consciousness, the environmental protection movement in the contemporary era to the vertical degree and depth of development to play certainpromotion.Rachel Carson’s point is simple and clear, which doesn’t mean to let people abandon the developmentof sicence, back to primitive society, rather than think the relationship between sicientific development andliving surrounding deeply, which doesn’t mean to object to industrial civilization and the development ofsicience and technology, rather than deal well with the relationship between human being’s developmentand natrue. As we all know, sometimes, fireworks from statesmen is less powerful than a right ideology.China’s special cultrue, society, population, and ecomomy make environmental and resource problem evenmore severe. Hence, we must take environmental protective problem seriously.
