Coal enterprises of China have the features of extensive operation, labor-intensive and heavy dependence on resources. Chinese Twelfth Five-Year Plan puts forward to building a new energy resources enterprise. Now coal enterprises face some questions, for examples, safe issues, increasing cost, resource constraints and so on. The enterprises have the urgent need to enhance their core competitiveness. The theory of core competitiveness makes the enterprise to obtain sustainable competitive advantage by enhancing the value of the enterprise's behaviors by fostering heterogeneous systematic ability. This article takes XJ group as an example to evaluate this enterprise's core competitiveness by using the theory of core competence, so as to provide a reference for Chinese coal enterprises'core competence improvement.Firstly, this paper adopts SWOT and KSF methods to analyze the coal enterprises' core competence factors, then use the AHP and GRAY methods to build the coal enterprise's core competence evaluation indicators system and model. The indicators system and evaluation model have the significance of methodological guidance, coal enterprise can use them to self-check.Secondly, the paper has the empirical research on XJ group's core competitiveness.The results of the study shows that, technological competitiveness plays a dominant role in the coal enterprise's core competence system, its weight is0.273, managerial competitiveness and market competitiveness are in a similar important degree, their weight are0.2535and0.2532, enterprise's growth ability plays an important part in the scientific capability, its weight is0.2203. The empirical results show that, XJ group core competence is stronger than most of other coal enterprises, its correlation degree R is0.7324, managerial competitiveness of correlation degree R3is0.716, technological competitiveness of correlation degree R3is0.713, market competitiveness of correlation degree R3is0.697, the enterprise growth ability of correlation degree R4is0.816. The study of core competence can be put into use as an example, it also can guide our coal enterprises to build the evaluation system and evaluation model.Finally, based on the empirical results, the paper proposes that XJ group should improve operational ability of resources, which correlation degree R15is0.333, the group should increase talent investment, which correlation degree R13is0.401. the ratio of technical personnel and total staff should been enhanced, which correlation degree R24is0.333, R&D input amount should been increased, which correlation degree R25is0.421, XJ group should increase customer loyalty, which correlation degree R34is0.746, XJ group should ensure a stability of their coal transportation and sales system, which correlation degree R35is0.649, the group should enhance their innovational ability, which correlation degree R45is0.417, XJ group will realize the enhancement of its core competence. According to the research model and enterprise's development, this paper give some practical and effective advices to upgrade its core competence, these upgrade strategies can be referenced, adopted and used by other coal enterprises.
