With economic development and prosperity of construction market, firms must provide construction products of short terms, high qualities and low costs, all of which call for advanced level of cost management. However, traditional ways of cost management is no longer able to adapt to such requirement of changes, which objectively requires creative ways of cost management of construction companies. Moreover, by means of advanced management methods, companies need to further control costs, lower costs and improve management. In recent years, many foreign enterprises and scholars have applied Earned Value Management to cost management of construction companies and have seen sound performance. Based on condition of construction companies in China, proper uses of Earned Value Management (EVM) practically make sense to carry out cost management.Drawing upon analysis of cost management for construction projects, this paper focused on application of EVM to cost management and control in construction projects, and then took the project of Liuyanghe Bridge in Chezhanbei Road of Changsha for example. Firstly, we talked about application of EVM to cost management of construction project comprehensively and theoretically. Secondly, with centre on actual condition and cost plan for project of Liuyanghe Bridge, we presented specific use of EVM in cost management of the project. To begin with analysis of project schedule, we calculated indexes of EVM and made further analysis of each index, to find out main reasons for changes of schedule and cost, and take measures timely to reduce cost back to a proper level.Application of EVM to cost management of construction projects contributed to dynamic control over project cost and schedule, so as to guarantee meeting the quality and deadline demand. The result of this paper is instructive in common construction projects.
