In Chinese ancient tradition, the funeral culture presents a unique position and wide research area due to its certain operating process and conscientious changing. This thesis focuses on the village funeral, attempting to show a picture of what it is like. In practice, apart from the materials obtained from fieldwork in Kuangtan village, Zaozhuang, along with contents and interpretations from traditional book "Sanli", I try to explore the development and effect of Chinese traditional culture in modern China. This paper can be divided into three main sections:Initially, I briefly introduce the geographical environment and history of Kuangtan village. This village, due to its proximity to the hometowns of Confucius and Mencius, has held a very strong conception of ancient rite for a long time. Furthermore, compared with Qufu, this village shows a wider cultural inclusiveness because of its special location in the interface area of Qi, Chu, and Lu States.Subsequently, I describe the special status and evolution process of Chinese funeral culture, as well as its circumstances in modern China. Specifically, the various existing funeral patterns and regions are the emphases of my discussion. The third section of my thesis takes one certain funeral ritual in Kuangtan village as a study case, through which picturing the ritual procedure, costume, buried equipment, and genuflection activity of the whole ceremony. Apart from the surveying materials, I also apply recordings from book "Sanli" to present to what extent they are different and then to investigate their impact factors. To sum up, the funeral culture should hold its own position in modern society. It may lose its lawlike compulsoriness, but will still offer an effective moral restriction for the public.
