At present container is the main method used in import and export. With rapid growth of container throughputs, the marshalling yards will no longer be able to meet the requires, so the back-up yards are increasingly needed. Limited by port land condition, the back-up yards have better location advantages as buffer areas, and cause more and more attentions. Equipment ratio is the key factor for improving the of the container terminal back-up yard system, so how to make the equipment ratio becomes an problem.This paper studies on container back-up yard system, through and cost performance design, various kinds of operation equipments are alocated rationally through the 3D dynamic simulation, then finds out the operation scheme with minimized cost from the scheme groups.Firstly, this paper elaborates the research status and the methods on container terminal back-up yard system at home and abroad, then introduces the research content. Futhermore, this paper specifies the components, functions, vehicle handling processes of the container terminal back-up yard based on the distinction between the marshalling yard and the back-up yard.And establishes the stochastic Petri net model that reflects the relationships of processes and information transmissions from the standpoint of the imported and exported loaded container and empty container. The Petri net model provides the effective support for establishing Simio simulation model.Secondly, the back-up yard system is divided into three subsystems which are carrying subsystem, operation subsystem and collecting and distributing transportation subsystem according to the processes.After that, this chapter builds the cost mathematical model as the measure of equipment ratio scheme for each subsystem respectively based on the key factors of influencing on the cost which provides the basis for realizing simulation goal.Finally, this paper bases on a loaded container imported procedure example, establishes a dynamic 3D simulation to simulate the real operation environment of the back-up yard.By setting different equipment ratio, gets six possible options. Then finds out the operation scheme with minimized operation cost by adjusting scheme parameters. The scheme provides decision reference for improveing equipment utilization rate and reducing the operation cost. The simulation result has a certain reference to manage the back-up yard effectively.
