The current globalization in the business world has brought about multinational companies which have enlarged their activities in such a way that if their corporate strategies are faulty, they will be headed for utter disaster. Many scholars, business individuals and groups have made their contributions mainly on the aspect of strategy formulation in general. This project studies analyzes failed corporate level strategies and those relevant to present the business environment which evolves faster in shorter time frames than it did few decades ago, when top management could make long-term plans and relax without need to review its plans. The global business environment places companies with the challenge of constant innovation and customer satisfaction which will be strong determinants for long-term performance and survival.This research identifies the root cause of the failure of conglomerates in the past, explaining the necessity of employing a related diversification strategy based on core competence(ices) in order to keep up with global trends such as process and product innovation, customer preference, ethics, government regulations and other forces shaping the global environment. The research does not deny the benefits and relevance of unrelated diversification strategies for few companies in the past and present, but brings to bear the necessity and benefits of a focused strategy in a dynamic environment. The research uses a qualitative descriptive analysis to present a highly comprehensive data, including tables and charts to make valid presentations and conclusions. A case analysis is also included on Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) and General Motors Company (GMC), comparing both companies in relation to data presented in previous chapters.This research has been able to ascertain the effectiveness in adopting a related diversified strategy, which enables a company gain mastery of its capabilities and core competencies in order to achieve sustainable competitive advantages. It has explained the importance of keeping customers in the center of product decisions. The objectives of the study have been met, portraying the long-term benefits of a related diversified strategy that can constantly and sufficiently cater for the needs customers in the business/market/industry where the company operates.
