Currently, the greenhouse gas and air pollution caused by motor vehicle emission is hindering the economic development of China. When we face the situation that the traditional energy is being exhausted and the air pollution becomes heavier, we need to realize the new energy motor has to replace the traditional internal combustion engine in the near future.From macro-policy perspective,’To development new energy motor and other strategic emerging industries’has been embedded into the12th ’Five year plan’. Therefore, we need to avoid moving along with previous unsuccessful process this time, and should focus on the new energy motor industry development straightforward. Only under this situation, we can have more options of energy sources other than the traditional energy, and it also can facilitate the sustainable development of economy and environment. Now, as a leading company in the new energy motor industry in China, BYD is the benchmark for other energy motor companies. So to study the competitive advantages and generic competitive strategies of BYD makes a lot of sense for the whole motor industry long term development in China.The article starts from the study of related theory research and analysis, which is related to the competitive advantages and generic competitive strategies, contributed by the experts and professors worldwide. Then it reviews the development history of BYD and its new energy motor. At last, based on the impact of the external macro environment, it studied the competitive advantages and generic competitive strategies of BYD.The article is composed of4parts. The first part focuses on the theoretical study of the competitive advantages and generic competitive strategies. The second part tells the motor industry development history of China, and further to review the new energy motor development history and current situation. The third part tells the development history of BYD and the milestones of its new motor energy motor development, and studies its competitive advantages and generic competitive strategies via PEST and Porter’s five forces model. The fourth part studies the competitive advantages and generic competitive strategies of BYD and compares it to those of Tesla. Finally, it draws the conclusion that BYD’s generic competitive strategies forms based on its external environment factors, and aligns with the enterprise vision.
