Urbanization is the miniature of a nation's comprehensive strength of economy, politics, culture, science and technology, etc. as well as an extremely complex systematic project that is related to prosperous economy, harmonious society, friendly environment and individual development. Since the Reform and Opening up for more than thirty years, the urbanization in China has been rapidly developed, which has become an important issue for a backward developing country to focus on in order to realize modernization. A city is the center of modern social production and people's life. Faced by the global climate change and increasingly deteriorating environment, the concepts of low-carbon economy and low-carbon cities reveal their unique values. Practice in China and abroad shows that cities are always worst-hit by the climate and environmental problems, especially for the big cities, where the influence will be more serious. Therefore, this fact should be regarded as a warning for China to promote urbanization process, and also the foundation to think about the approaches of China's urbanization development. The core content of this paper consists of five parts. In the first part, it begins with a review of the research on the development of urbanization and Low-carbon theory in China and abroad, and an introduction to the research methods together with research significance and value of this subject. In the second part, it focuses on the explanation of the theoretical basis and origin of Low-carbon Urbanization. Based on the illustration of urbanization and low-carbon theories, it analyzes the inner relations between the two and thus further builds a theoretical basis for analyzing the defects of traditional urbanization in the next part. In the third part, according to the theoretical study above, new requirements of urbanization development under the guidance of Low-carbon theory are put forward based on analyzing the defects of traditional urbanization, aiming at providing theoretical support for discussing the development of urbanization in China. Case analysis is conducted in the fourth part. Four pilot cities at home and abroad as well as their successful implementation of Low-carbon urbanization are illustrated. Several feasible approaches for developing Low-carbon Urbanization are proposed based on the case analysis. In the fifth part, the theories and case study discussed above are summarized. On that basis, under the guidance of Low-carbon Urbanization, three approaches for urbanization development that can be taken as reference in promoting China's urbanization are put forward tentatively, i.e. industrial structure upgrading and industry migration, developing low-carbon community, and building low-carbon new cities. |
