In recent years, optical communication is keeping on developing continuously and rapidly. It can be applied to many fields in all communication network and system because of its special advantages such as high speed, low loss and great capacity. But the difficulty of converting optical signals into electrical ones is still blocking the development of optical network. In order to construct optical facilities such as optical buffering, optical delay and optical switching, variety of key technologies to getting slow light shew up one after another, which attract a lot of researchers'interest.The two way of getting slow light is from material dispersion and waveguide dispersion. From the former, we can use several methods like EIT(Electromagnetically Induced Transparency),SBS(Stimulated Brillium Scattering),CPO(Coherent Population Oscillations Effect); From the latter, we can use other methods such as photonic crystal fiber, photonic crystal waveguide, photonic crystal microcavity and quantum well etc. This paper mainly presents slow light induced by CPO effect.All of the present experiments and theories of the slow light based upon the ideal CPO effect deal with the resonant situation where the pump frequency exactly matches the gap of the energy levels of active atoms. In this work, however, the CPO theory of slow light is extended to cover both resonance and off-resonance. Based on semi-classic density matrix equations and light transmissiontheory, the derivation and calculation of susceptibility was done again in actural situation considering inhomogeneous broadening of energy caused by Stark-splitting into account. We then demonstrate the results with some figures made by Matlab and summarize the characteristics of slow light. More deeper problems is under excavation and more fresh method is being put forward.
