| Objective This thesis is intended to analyze internal and external factors in Medical Journal of Chinese People,s Armed Police Forces(CPAPF), and explore the mode of academic development for Medical Journal of CPAPF in order to make it fully reflect the medical superiorities of CPAPF and the direction in which medical technology proceeds.Methods (1) An introduction is given to the function of CPAPF medical systems and the mission of Medical Journal of CPAPF. (2) A comparison is made between papers published by this journal and those from other journals from 1999 to 2008. Subjects and institutions of highly cited papers of CPAPF published outside the Medical Journal of CPAPF from 1999 to 2008 were analyzed in order to make clear the main research fields and institutions. (3) Subjects and institutions of highly cited papers published in the Medical Journal of CPAPF from 1999 to 2008 were analyzed and compared with medical preponderant subjects and institutions in CPAPF. (4) The column distribution of highly cited papers published in Medical Journal of CPAPF from 2004 to 2008 was analyzed. A survey on the main problemss with the Medical Journal of CPAPF in terms of papersˊ quality and service for corps was made through telephone interviews among 30 medical personnel from 10 medical institutions of CPAPF.(5) The current domestic and foreign development and competition between medical journals, and the status of military medicine journals were analyzed. Methods mentioned above can help unveil the advantages, disadvantages, opportunities and threats facing Medical Journal of CPAPF, and put forward the development strategy based on the SWOT analysis.Results The finding of this thesis is listed as follows: (1) The number of medical papers published in Medical Journal of CPAPF was 4336, which accounted for 16.12% of all the papers published by CPAPF from 1999 to 2008.(2) The number of medical papers published by CPAPF increased gradually from 1999 to 2008 but has been in decline since 2005.(3) 22558 papers published outside the Medical Journal of CPAPF were cited at a frequency of 2.98 times, 4336 papers in Medical Journal of CPAPF were cited 2.47 times.(4) The influence of Medical Journal of CPAPF is of the same extent among the hospitals of CPAPF. (5) There were 1993 highly cited medical papers published outside Medical Journal of CPAPF, in which 678 papers were published in 31 journals including 26 professional journals and 5 general journals. (6) The top ten subjects which produce the most highly cited medical papers are: pharmacology, experimentation medicine, orthopedics, cardiovascular, traditional Chinese medicine, hospital management, nursing, radiology, gastroenterology and oncology; The top ten institutions which publish most highly cited medical papers are: General Hospital of CPAPF, Medical College of CPAPF, Affiliated Hospital of Medical College , Guangdong, Hubei, Shanghai, Anhui, Beijing, Zhejiang, Jiangsu Provincial Corps hospital of CPAPF. (7) The top ten subjects which have the most highly cited papers of Medical Journal of CPAPF are basically consistent with the preponderant subjects of CPAPF. (8) The columns which collect more highly cited papers are rescue medicine, medical services and experts forums. (9) Telephone interview results indicate that the main problems existing in Medical Journal of CPAPF are the too large a number of basal research papers and too few clinical research articles (36.7%); clinical experience papers are mostly of a low academic level (33.3%); the publishing cycle of rescue medicine papers is too long(16.7%); papers on nursing deal with repetitive topics (13.3%); the online editor network platform has not been set up(10%); the quality of ediction needs to be improved(6.7%). The analysis above brings to light the advantages, disadvantages, opportunities and threats of Medical Journal of CPAPF:Advantages: (1) Extensive influence in CPAPF;(2) Obvious brand effect; (3) Excellent editors and readers; (4) Mature journal management systems;(5) Advantageous location; (6) An independent legal institution;(7) an optimized structure of papers.Disadvantages: (1)Poor ability to attract innovative papers; (2) Weak marketing force; (3) Regional limitations; (4) More theoretical research papers and fewer practical papers; (5) Lack of an interactive network platform.Opportunities: (1) New opportunities for development stimulated by the idea of "building a modern medical service of CPAPF;(2) An important carrier of information transmission and important platform for innovation of science and technology;(3) Specific guidelines for the national development of high-quality sci-tech journals.Threats: (1) The threat from market competition of medical journals;(2) Staffing adjustment effects in hospital of CPAPF;(3) Obvious competitive advantages of professional journals over general journals.Conclusions: The Medical Journal of CPAPF is an important academic journal in the military medicine and has a wide influence and military medical features, forming its own unique academic style. The strategies for development of Medical Journal of CPAPF are:Actively adapt to the needs of the construction of a modern medical system of CPAPF; Long-effect mechanisms should be established to build up the competitiveness of the characteristic brand; Try to get the support of national guidelines for well-designed sci-tech periodicals; Face the world development and expand influence worldwide; Be based on the edge-cutting subjects in CPAPF and attracte innovative papers; Participate in group competition with military medical journals; Implement technological promotion strategy and accelerate journal modernization; Enhance propaganda and strive for more market shares. |
