The research on characteristic of random rough surface has extensive application in modern national defense, science and engineering. With this characteristic, infrared detectors, laser radar, target recognition and other remote sensing equipments can be optimized and promoted greatly.In this paper, the research meaning and background of polarization characteristic of laser backscattering of the random rough surface has been introduced. The development of relate fields in and abroad are reviewed too. Basic theories of scattering are given and appearance characteristic of rough surface are described in the paper. Meanwhile, the backscattering coefficient and depolarization formulations of Gaussian rough surface have been deduced. The main analytical methods of rough surface scattering are described, including perturbation method and Kirchhoff method. Then the characteristics of random rough surface laser scattering have been studied, including theoretical modeling and experimental measurements in two parts. Kirchhoff theory method with the analog part, by the MATLAB software on the impact angle scattering coefficient, roughness, incident wavelength, the incident light polarization factors are calculated and compared. Experimental uses of 632.8nm and 532nm laser for the incident light, measured when the target roughness, the incident light wavelength, angle of incident are not the same, the corresponding backscattering properties. Theoretical simulations and experiments show that the incident angle, target roughness, incident wavelength, the incident light polarization and other factors on the rough surface after the properties of scattered light has an impact, and the experimental results and theoretical simulations are similar to some extent of.This article on the random rough surface backscattering results for the properties of target identification and application of the theory has some value, and it has a positive meaning for further study of the characteristics of the target.
