Appraisal has always been the most important field in Archival Science, because what the archivists did has no difference with'building the future of our document heritage'. It is the archivists who decide which part of our life will be left to the future generations. Meanwhile, appraisal is also the most difficult part. Both Hilary Jenkinson's theory and the life-cycle approach of T.R. Schellenberg have suffered various criticizes. However, these couldn't drag the pace of the development of Archival Science. In1990s, a subversive theory------Canadian Macroappraisal was born. Thus, this thesis intends to develop a historical, comprehensive, critical analysis of the practice and theory of Canadian Macroappraisal, so that we could have a through understanding of Macroappraisal and stimulate the development of China Archival Science. In later1990s, the archival work of Canada was faced with a series of troubles: the booming of paper records, the emergence of electronic records, the failure of archival appraisal system, some scandals caused by the archival appraisal, the ineffectiveness of T.R. Schellenberg's theory and so on. It was these factors that stimulated Canada archivists to reform archival appraisal.Compared with traditional appraisal theories, Canadian Macroappraisal was based on specific philosophy. First, archives should reflect the whole society; second, mind over matter. Based on such philosophy, Professor Terry·Cook posed the Canadian Macroappraisal theory with the modern administrative system and his study experiences.Another difference with traditional appraisal theories is that it has a complete 'theory package'which consists not only the abstract theory, but also the methodology that links theory and practice, that is, how to put theory into practice. This article describes the content of the methodology and the practice in1990s in detail. After the detailed description of the content and background of Macroappraisal theory and methodology, this thesis analyzes critically the advantages and disadvantages of Macroappraisal theory and practice, mainly from the comparison with traditional theories and other Macroappraisal theories.Up to now, the influence of Canada has increased a lot. And its practice made it more convincing. Thus many western countries began to borrow Canadian Macroappraisal theories to solve its appraisal problems, such as News land, Australia, South Africa and the like. This thesis introduces the influence and practice of Canada Macroappraisal theory on western countries, using Australia as an example.Of course, whenever we introduce a theory, the main focus is to solve the domestic archival problems. At the end of the thesis, the author analyses what to pay attention to when borrowing the theory.
