UWB has a number of advantages that make it attractive for reseachers.In particular, UWB systems have a very wideband spectrum, have noise-like signal with low energy density, have very good time domain resolution for ranging, are resistant to jamming and don't cause significant interference to existing radio systems. UWB has a broad application foreground. It can be used as detection, cloaking and ranging in military and wireless data transmission, short-range detection in everyday life.Firstly, the main theories about the ranging system have been talked. And then the UWB signal generator has been researched, including step-recovery diode(SRD) generator, avalanche transistor generator, parallel SRD generator and cascaded avalanche transistor generator. Each generator has been analyzed theoretically and simulated with ADS(Advanced Design System). The proper UWB signal generator for the ranging system has been chose through comparing these generators mentioned above.Another key point of this paper was the design of UWB antenna, Vivaldi antenna, for the UWB ranging system. The Vivaldi antenna has been researched deeply, including theoretical design, simulation, manufacturing and debugging. Then, we analyzed if the antenna could meet the requirements of the system according to its performance and size.Finally, the transmitting part was manufactured detailly, and the results turned out to be successful. The UWB ranging system was simulated simply to prove the ranging principles.
