Staring imaging lidar, also named planar-array imaging lidar, has been known as a new hot topic during these years in field of space exploration. It can breakthrough the limitation of single point detection and scanning imaging methods, and shows a direct, fast, accurate characteristic, which are widely used in terrain capture, city planning, military target recognition and tracking. The technology provides great help in establishing 3D-model for town, district, nation and even the earth. This paper first introduces the development stages and evolution of lidar, especially the staring lidar system. According to dual channel system, double linear model is proposed on base of single linear model, and for both the range errors under the impact of shot noise are analyzed. By using simulation software, the experiment on random vibration shows out the relationship between relative range error and exposure time. The inhomogeneous characteristic shown on output intensity image has adverse effects on ranging accuracy. One of the important reasons is different performance of each image point during the photoelectric conversion process. This can be regarded as inherency of system and corrected by linear fitting correction method. As a result, response of each pixel in different gray-scale can be calibrated. The system range error is corrected by range calibration, and experiments both on ground and airplane are accomplished. The ground experiment takes advantage of multi-frame superposition to improve ranging performance, and the airborne experiment uses image sequence stitching to improve SNR. The range resolution is 0.80m at the distance of 600m and 1km on ground, and nearly to 1.50m on airplane. Finally, the entire project is summarized and the future research suggestions are proposed.
