R. Ahlswede etc proposed the concept of Network Coding in 2000, which completely subverts the traditional routing methods. Network Coding allows nodes to encode the transmission information, and then forward the encoded packets. Receiver will get original packets according to parts of encoded packets that it has received. With the research of Network Coding, people have found that Network Coding not only can improve network throughput, but also balance network load, save node energy, and enhance network robustness.Firstly, in this paper we described the concept of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) and Network Coding, as well as the problems and research issues of WSNs. Moreover, we analyzed advantages of Network Coding in WSNs applications. Therefore, these leaded to the focus of the study.Secondly, we analyzed the strengths and weaknesses of GEAR routing protocol. In order to solve the weaknesses of GEAR, we put forward a new routing protocol ANC-GEAR based on Adaptive Network Coding (AdapCode) and GEAR protocol. ANC-GEAR protocol could determine dynamically Network Coding Scheme according to the current network link density. NS2 simulation results showed that ANC-GEAR could effectively improve network throughput, save node energy, reduce average end-to-end delay and extend lifetime of network. Finally, this paper presented a new multi-path routing protocol NCE-ReInForM based on Network Coding and ReInForM routing protocol in order to ensure transmission reliability of network. The new protocol considered the factors: shortest paths, remaining energy of node. The new protocol could reduce the number of paths needed to transmit packets, the number of packet forwarding and the number of retransmittion. Moreover, NCE-ReInForM protocol also adopted mechanism of energy consumption. NS2 simulations results showed that NCE-ReInForM not only ensured the reliability of transmission, but also effectively saved node energy, balanced energy of network and reduce average end-to-end delay.
