Wireless Video Sensor Networks (WVSNs) has a wide range of applications, including video surveillance, environment monitoring, etc. The overall performance of WVSNs largely depends on video sensor node which plays role of basic functional unit in WVSNs.Based on a comprehensive survey and comparisons of representative video sensor nodes, a classification framework of video sensor node architectures into general, high performance and intelligent architectures is presented. To achieve a tradeoff between cost and performance, a video sensor node design scheme based on ARM7 is proposed in this thesis. The scheme features a simplified architecture as it mainly consists of an ARM7TDMI-S core microprocessor, a CMOS image sensor and a ZigBee wireless transceiver while frame buffer is eliminated. Communication interfaces between modules are specifically developed. In software design phase, the node is made capable of camera initialization and configuration, image acquisition and transfer via UART and image display on PC software. A custom user command format is also defined. Performance tests results demonstrate that the image acquisition rate can reach 5QCIF frames per second, which basically meets the required demand.
