With the development of the Campus Network and its application in various fields, campus network has shifted from traditional business to forms of per to per and web2.0. So it is urgent for the network monitoring system to conduct a timely and accurate analysis and control, and there is a higher demand of the network performance monitoring and operational management. Therefore, the research on the characteristics of network traffic is of great significance to the network management, planning and development. The monitoring and analysis of network traffic is an effective way to obtain network status. Network traffic measurement is the basis of network management. The realization of five functional modules regulated by ISO is more or less dependent on the network traffic monitoring. So on the basis of the present campus network management it is necessary to realize the whole network traffic monitoring and control to better manage and optimize the network.Firstly this paper introduces the background of network traffic measurement, the current research situation, and the significance of network traffic measurement. Then it conducts a deep analysis of network traffic and control technology. It focuses on the methods of network traffic and using the relative theoretical makes a comparative analysis of signature-based method and network-behavior- technology-based method.Based on the network traffic measurement theory, this paper designs a cross-platform system of campus network traffic monitoring and controlling of JAVA language. This paper discusses the overall design objective and the system outline. It gives a detailed description of the design and implementation of data collection filtering module, packet analysis module, system action and response module and user interface display module. The tool of WinPacp is used to obtain data, and multi-mode traffic collection mechanism is used to analyze the network traffic under different situations. Signature-based method and network-behavior- technology-based method are adopted to analyze data packet. The module supports a variety of traffic analysis, including TCT/IP, PER TO PER, Netflow and sFlow and gives the detailed structure of traffic data and statistical information database.
