Fingerprint identification has been one of the most effective methods on personal identification from long time ago due to fingerprints' uniqueness and invariance. Automatic Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) research is an important subject in the field of image processing and pattern recognition, and has practical value and broad markets in future.In this Paper,we focus our research on the fingerprint image segmentation,fingerprint orientation field computation, fingerprint image thin and fingerprint matching and receive some achievements.In the feature extraction part,based on tracing the thin ridge expressing the type of current point and the states of its 8-neighborhood pixels by 8-neighbour coding, an intensive research has been made and realize the algorithm on feature extraction, This algorithm can delete false minutiae and store true minutiae at the same time so that it can improve the efficiency of the algorithm.The Paper made a survey on fingerprint image enhancement and proposed a novel enhancement algorithm which adopts HHT to enhance fingerprint images. The proposed algorithm effectively overcomes the drawbacks result from the limitations of traditional Gabor filters. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can effectively improve the quality of fingerprint images.The Paper systemically and deeply investigated the theory and methods of AFIS, which may provide theoretical and technical support for further developing the AFIS with higher performance. It is of active significance to promote the development and application of automatic fingerprint identification technology.
