As a novel type of optical fibers, photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) have emerged in the past fewer years. These fibers are characterized by wavelength-scale micro structures of cladding region.Filling the organic liquid which is sensitive to the temperature in the air hole of the cladding layer , the refractive index of liquid effects the PCF optical properties, such as the effective refractive index, distribution of mode field and the confinement loss. We can obtain the changes of the temperature by measuring the output power of the end of the photonic crystal fiber.Photonic crystal fiber has the flexible structure and excellent performance, in the air hole filling gas, liquid, nano-particles, liquid crystal, make it all kinds of high sensitivity sensors and special optical devices, play great part in biological chemistry, environmental monitoring and optical network area.This thesis mainly theoretical analysis and experimental research the characteristics of the total internal reflection of photonic crystal fiber with filling liquid, Now summarized the main contents and Innovation points as follows1. Introduced the concept of the optical fiber sensor and development, the basic concept of photonic crystal fiber and classification, and the optical fiber sensor photonic crystals and the present study situation.2. Introduced the finite element method used for numerical simulation of photonic crystal fiber , and Comsol the finite element simulation software.3. Study the relationship between wavelength and PCF characteristics filling liquid , temperature and liquid materials about refractive index, Mode field area and the fiber loss.In this new liquid light switch, the refractive index of the liquid filled in the air hole increase from 1.44385 to 1.4439, refractive index changes for 5.0 x 10-5, that the temperature changes 0.1℃was enough to put the light switch from "1" to "0".4. Introduced the optical fiber sensing experiment on photonic crystals fiber the experience in dealing with special optical fibers: special fiber cutting, welding and liquid filling etc.Filling thermal mixture in a PCF(FengHuo YZI) with the filling ratio 0.55:0.45 to prove our numerical simulation, and get experimental phenomenon the preliminary.
