To most Chinese people, Dalai Lama is unfamiliar, but to western people,Dalai Lama is an old honorable monk who was the revered spiritual leader of Tibet but exiled by Red China for over forty years. This image is formed by western media. We conducted a quantitative and qualitative analysis on the 108 reports on New York Times during 1980 to 2010 with an aim to explore how New York Times frame the image of Dalai Lama by reports. In the guided of Fairclough's three-dimensional model and news frame theory, the present study is conducted in the following procedure : description, interpretation and explanation。We finally draw the conclusion that the image of Dalai Lama manifested through the Dalai Lama-related reports on New York Times bears close relations to the Portrayal of images of the Beijing side and the Dalai Lama side by the newspaper. The reports tend to uglify the image of the Beijing side and beautify that of the Dalai Lama side.
