Digital Terrain Model (DTM) as a technology to identify map information. It is widely applied in GIS, terra study, it is an important foundation of the modern road survey and design. If the DTM technology is not well used in road works, then it is very difficult to have a breakthrough in CAD technology of road. It is necessary to research in-depth of the digital terrain model algorithms and applications, promote development of the integrated System about road and DTM.At first, this paper introduces the development of some Domestic and foreign software about DTM, analysis the advantages and disadvantages of several common software about DTM carefully; Second, I analysis and summary the building theory of DTM. Last, I study By-point insertion in detail improved point-by-point insertion method. Through my own innovation of existing research results, optimized algorithm for DTM , improved editing and other interactive features. The usage of concise and comprehensive data structure is to ensure a good expansibility, and combined with other modules of MECAD, be proved in Road survey and design by the engineering projects of Wuhan Branch belongs to China Huaxi Engineering Design & Construction.Study on DTM combined with STL, Delaunay Triangulation theory and Road survey and design. Innovational points of this study are mainly as follows: The application of locating target triangle by the outer boundary of triangular network.1. The analysis and application about the characteristics of triangular surface: the analysis of characteristics is based on the vertex height of triangle have three cases: General triangle; Triangle including flat edge; Flat triangle, be applied to contour line and watershed analysis.2. The research of the algorithm about regional watershed analysis: Through analysis the six watershed types, proposed analysis of water flow in triangular face.
