| Object-Based Storage (OBS) is an emerging standard network storage interface designed to address this problem. Using object-based interface, OBS can overcome the limitation of existing network storage architecture: file-based Network-attached Storage (NAS) and block-based Storage Area Network (SAN), and can improve performance, stability, data sharing, scalability and intelligence. At the same time, devices have embedded with more and more processing capability. To make use of the processing capability in the devices, people migrates a part of application functions to the devices which is called active storage. Active storage can help clients to download their functions to the storage device, helping to reduce the data transferred over the network, using the processing capability of the whole system and finally improve the performance of the system.The traditional interface of the active storage is file or block that is not familiar to the storage device. The interface has limited the improvement of the active storage on functions and scalability. The emergency of object-based interface can help to improve the active storage.We initiate a new frame work to implement active storage in Object-Based Storage System. T10 OSD protocol is modified, including defining new active objects such as method object and policy object. There are two kinds of method object: user method object which processes the user objects and get started by user's read/write request; system method object which is self-controlled according to the comparison between policy object and the condition in the system. Policy object is a set of conditions. Combining these two objects, a uniform framework for active storage has been set up in the Object-Based Storage System. The experiment shows that using method object can reduce the data transferred in the network, the user response time and improve the system performance. The policy object and method object working together can help to improve the system intelligence. |
