Ultrasonic ranging is a very effective non-contact distance measurement method that can be widely used in measuring distance or needs of the occasion of level parameters, such as industrial site, vehicle navigation, underwater acoustics engineering and other fields. Therefore, deeply investigation on ultrasonic distance measurement methods and theories is very important and necessary. In order to further improve the accuracy of ultrasonic ranging, one ultrasonic ranging system with microcontroller-based and temperature compensation is designed.Transit-time ultrasonic distance measurement is introduced in this thesis and several key factors that will affect the accuracy of distance measurement are analyzed. The scheme of using the 40 kHz ultrasonic as carrier and the ambient temperature compensation system which cause measure errors is put forward and improve the measurement system's accuracy and ranging. The hardware circuit of ultrasonic ranging system is designed as well as software is programmed.Experimental demonstration was carried out based on the ranging system in the last part of the thesis ,each technical indicator has been reached based on the design requirement as well as the causes of measurement error was analyzed, and the factors of causing measurement error also were investigated. At last, a wide range of potential applications for ultrasonic ranging system was demonstrated.
