With the development of Internet technology, Computer Virtualization Technique carries more network services than ever. And in the field of network application, the problem of "one-size-fits-all" makes the rapid development of research on network virtulization, which not only cuts down the IT operation cost, but also produces the increasment of security and reliability of network system.The article deeply reserches on the network virtualization technology, including its development course and fundamental principle, and then mainly introduces the key techniques, methods, and facing challenges of several most prevalent solutions. Nowadays, there have been a lot of branches on this technology, of which Data Link Layer Virtualization is a very important one, so then we expond the features of the virtulization implement of OSI Layer 2 with connotations of frames of data link layer.In condition with the OpenVZ vitrualization solution which we have used in our experiment, we analyze its proceeding mechanism and technical principles. Then we have a detailed test of its performance on the consideration of traffic shaping, bandwidth allocation, and other Layer 2 network transmission capabilities with the help of some standard software on the Linux platform. With the analysis of the results, we point out the advantages and disadvantages of this solution, as well as some advices for improvement to guide the layer 2 protocol design.Up to the present, there is not a complete set of function for most of the network virtualization solutions, and a unified standard for designing and implying as also, which leads to various functional satisfactions of different solutions. As for the requirement of safety and independency for different virtual networks, we inquire into communication mechanism and implementation methods of the OpenVZ Layer 2 Bridge module. Based on the insufficiency of the traditional Bridge, we propose a new Layer 2 protocol---VN protocol, and give a completely introduction of its mechanism of implement, key data struction definition and the main functional procedure.Finally, we simulate and test the VN protocol under our experimental platform to show its availability. Through the comprehensive simulating and analyzing of its configuration and management for virtual network, we validate the performance of our protocol. And the comparing results prove that our proposed protocol fulfil the requirement of coexistance and independence for multiple virtual networks with a solid availability and lower consumption.
