Wireless Mesh Network is a promising broadband wireless network architecture, which has not only inherited the easy-to-use feature of the low-cost wireless LAN technology, but also made reference to the self-organizing network. It has achieved a great improvement in scalability, robustness and thus has excellent views in varieties of fields. On the other hand, Security issues do not get enough attention in the earlier research, as the standard of IEEE 802.11s protocol remains on draft stage. Because of this, there are large number securities problems in process of popularize the wireless mesh network at the present stage, which also gravely limit wholesale business. Security issue of wireless mesh network becomes a very urgent task, as what is stated above.IEEE 802.11s is an IEEE standard of wireless mesh network, which retains some security protocol of 802.11i and defines a secure access solution—MSA, still does not design much on security of routing protocol. Some potential safety hazard comes from this.Design and implementation of Secure IEEE 802.11s wireless mesh network is stated in this thesis. After the theoretical analysis on related features and key technology of wireless mesh network, IEEE 802.11s standard and a prototypal implementation are deeply analyzed. Based on the research, a prototype of both hardware and software architecture is designed. Then, the leaks of routing protocol in IEEE 802.11s standard is analyzed and some security issues of Hybrid Wireless Mesh Protocol—used in 802.11s standard—are proposed. Two attach methods in different way is design to damage usability of wireless mesh network. On the foundation of realizing attack, an intrusion detection system is designed to identifying malicious peer in the network. Different detection and response pattern aimed at different intrusion is proposed base on the extraction of network characteristics when attacked it is. This system also guarantees the network is available on the circumstance of under attack, which also cost a little system performance. At last, an IEEE 802.11s wireless mesh network testbed and numerous experiments which includes the outcome evaluation is introduced in this thesis. The result shows the correctness and effectiveness of design, which really effectively ensures the usability of network.Nowadays, wireless access to the Internet becomes an urgent task for the ISPs; wireless mesh network will become more and more important in this marketing process. This thesis solves some of the security problems in this area. As a final demonstration of an "863" project, the secure prototype testbed is deployed in reality scenarios for the testing and data collecting. It will provide a strong technical support to the future large-scale wireless mesh network applications.
