Embedded technology in China has entered a rapid period of development since the year of 2000. Terminal unit is the very important device in automatic monitoring system. There are so many equipment abroad was used. it is mono-functioning, expensive, inconvenience to maintain. This has greatly limited the development of system monitoring. The application of embedded system brings opportunities. The advanced RTU can be designed only by our own ability. In this thesis, the theory of systems engineering and embedded technology is used to RTU design. It can change the binding constraint step by step though cost saving.This thesis analyzes the research and application current situations at home and overseas of embedded remote terminal unit when we acquire the data of system. This reveals the research significance of subject. The monitoring terminal is described in detail from three ways of system overall structure, hardware design and software development. Firstly the thesis starts with the dam data monitoring system. Therefore it is valuable for theory and practice, and then analyses the study situation. Secondly the overall design of RTU is come up with the embedded knowledge and technology. In the hardware there have three past, including the development of central processing Unit, IO module and communication module. In software the program is realized with the modular thinking. There are there part to be done in turn, bottom hardware drivers, TCP/IP protocol stack and Modbus protocol. At last it is the data acquisition and output control.Finally the purpose is to achieve the RTU and is debugged systematically under the help of test tool. there are some routine tests finding some problems and giving proper solutions. The design method is reasonable and effective. There are a lot of process skills with strong practical significance. This device will have very broad application prospects...
