Video image capture is applied in many areas of society, such as personal electronics, medical, military, surveillance, industrial, agriculture and other fields. The method of traditional video image acquisition is to use the CCD camera, video capture card, PC machine to get the live video information, although easily implemented, the equipment results in the system bulky, high cost, inconvenient to move and carry, so it is very difficult to capture the video image in complex environment. The emergence and development of embedded image acquisition system overcome the shortcomings of the traditional image acquisition system effectively.This paper presents a solution of video image acquisition based on embedded Linux. This system uses Samsung 16/32-bit RISC processor S3C2440A(ARM920T core), peripherals use the USB camera and LCD; operating system uses embedded Linux 2.6.12; the camera driver adopts modular driver, so it can easily manage, conserve memory and reduce power consumption. Video image acquisition program uses the V4L programming interface, in the this program, mmap function mapped LCD display buffer to user space memory area, so is can improve the display speed; finally, using Linux-Based TCP/IP protocol socket programming the server and client, solves the problem of video data transmission.This system is a complete video image collecting system, which adopts modular design, every module is corporate, and has some scalability. Compared with the traditional system, the system of this type has small size, low cost, easy to move, it is relatively easy to capture the images in complex and harsh environment. The entire system does not use any commercial software, developed completely from the bottom to achieve the purpose of the system cost.
