Space laser communication has a wide field of applications for its high-speed, broadband, anti-jamming and anti-interception capability, and other outstanding advantages. The compound-axis ATP (Acquisition Tracking Pointing) control subsystem is not only one of the most important parts but also is one of the key of technologies on the Space Laser Communication system. In this subsystem, the Coarse Tracking Assembly mainly aimed to accomplish the high probability, fast acquisition. And spot detection is the basis for stability in coarse tracking.To meet the system compact and light, this paper designs a spot detection system of coarse tracking unit about space laser communication based on FPGA, and achieved the extraction of spot miss distance about ATP coarse tracking unit under the condition of weak signal and strong background light. FPGA acquire the spot image detected by CCD(charge-coupled device) camera, through filtering, adaptive threshold, spot center coordinate calculation processing. Obtaining spot distance, and send it to the following servo drive unit by high-speed serial port. Meanwhile, adaptive light intensity control the camera so that the SNR of the output spot images is optimal, at last, displayed the image on a PAL function monitor.This design system achieved technical indicators are:the spot detection accuracy for the coarse tracking is 10μrad and it can reliable access to the field of fine tracking. It has achieved that the camera's adaptive light intensity control and the system miniaturization and lighter.
