The mobile communication has rapidly developed in the history of the development of communication technology.After the evolvement from analogue to digital mobile communication system, the third-generation mobile communication (3G) technology is gradually replacing the 2G, becoming the main part of New-generation Mobile Communication market.In the three major standards of the third generation mobile communication systems, TD-SCDMA—proposed by China firstly, is the mobile communication standard with independent intellectual property in the core technology. China Mobile has carried out the TD trial network construction since 2007. The current TD-SCDMA network is being improved gradually, but still has some coverage holes and marginal weak-field. So the 2G/3G interoperability technology is necessary to permit users with weak network coverage in the TD net to switch to GSM net, avoiding calls drop, Then the GSM net which is mature and complete can be the supplementary and supporting part for the TD-SCDMA network.This paper discusses the 2G/3G interoperability's application in TD-SCDMA network optimization, and describes the development of TD-SCDMA system in detail. Focusing on the technical characteristics of TD-SCDMA, starting from the association between TD-SCDMA and GSM, the signaling processes of handover and reselection between TD and GSM have been investigated deeply, and the basic reason of 2G/3G interoperability has been analyzed. Focusing on the triggering event, switching processes and key performance indicators of the network optimization of 2G/3G interoperability, the optimization principles and basic strategies of 2G/3G interoperability has been studied. And through a large number of examples, the paper summarizes the main problems in 2G/3G interoperability optimization. Under the guidance of the theoretical tools; and through testing, signaling analyzing, and collecting traffic statistics, the paper also analyzes the reason for the problems and proposes solutions such as optimization of neighbor cell, network parameters check, and threshold modification. Through verification, the network optimization methods of 2G/3G interoperability for different scenarios are summarized. As a result, the construction of TD-SCDMA network can be speeded up, and the costs can be reduced and the high-quality 3G service can be come true.
