Wireless multimedia sensor networks are derived from the traditional sensor networks. Thanks to the introduction of content of multimedia (e.g. audio and video), wireless multimediasensor networks have stronger sensor power. However, the resources(e.g. energy and bandwidth)of sensor nodes are limited while multimedia streams contain a large amount of data and havereal-time requirements, which makes a key issue that how to protect the quality of multimediatransmission. This thesis proposes a location-based multipath routing protocol named MRCD, which usesthe approach of cross-layer design and adopts the idea of differentiated service to protect thevideo transmission quality. Firstly, the uses of multipath transmission and traffic predictionmechanism balance the network loads and prolong the network life cycle; Secondly, MRCDadopts the idea of differentiated services and cross-layer design(the application layer andnetwork layer) approach to give more protection to the key frames of the video streams to ensurethe quality of video transmission. The results of the simulation indicates that the proposed protocol in large-scale multimediasensor networks can reduce network congestion, balance network loads and extend the networklife cycle compared to single path routing protocol. Moreover, MRCD has a smaller end to enddelay and is more suitable for wireless multimedia sensor networks.
