With the video-on-demand (VOD) services becoming more and more popular, the requirement of large scale distribution on VOD system increases sharp. Correspondingly, the development and maintaining of the traditional CDN architecture VOD system cost much, and the capacity of its single server and the scalability of system are limited. In contrast, P2P grows rapidly in the streaming media service field. P2P has lower development cost and better scalability than CDN, but the VOD system using P2P also faces some problems, such as bad service on "cold" media, instability of transfer, and large amount traffic of inter-AS. So far, the most common solution is the CDN-P2P hybrid architecture. User peers upload data for others while downloading. The "cold" media is served by the CDN servers as compensation. It compensates the deficiency of P2P, and also cuts down the cost, improves the scalability. Currently, the VOD system of Shanghai Telecom is CDN architecture, and they hope to introduce P2P technology.This paper based on the requirement of Shanghai Telecom, studied on the hybrid architecture VOD system. We analyzed the network environment and user behavior characters of Shanghai Telecom VOD system. According to the characters, we designed a local-aware hybrid architecture VOD system and a cache policy based on popularity. In order to evaluate the performance promotion of the system and the relative characters, the opposite simulation system was implied. The research results should have some reference valuation for the continuous studies and the practical developments.
