With the development of information technology and economic globalization, barcode technology has been used more and more widely. Because one-dimensional barcode (1D barcode) information capacity is small, and it has to rely on database, thus it can't meet the demands of people. To solve this problem, two-dimensional barcode (2D barcode) technology was invented. 2D barcode is a symbol with information, which is an important means of storing information automatically, carrying information, and reading by machine automatically. The information can be product identification, identity documents and so on. 2D barcode has high information capacity, high reliability, high error correction and other characteristics. Until now, 2D barcode has been used widely, such as commercial, transportation, industrial production, public security and diplomatic fields.However, both the traditional 1D barcode and 2D barcode only represent information, without visually significant appearance. Thus, their appearances are boring, and people can't know what kind of information is implanted in them from themselves. In order to overcome such drawback of the conventional barcode, recently some visually significant barcodes have been proposed. This paper presents a novel visual 2D barcode structure, and gives a specific encoding method. As visual 2D barcode is based on the traditional 2D barcode, this paper first studies the encoding theory, symbol structure, and recognition principle of the traditional 2D barcode, and then studies visual 2D barcode related technologies.This study mainly includes the structure design of central region visual 2D barcode, and the encoding method. According to the human visual selective attention mechanism, central region visual 2D barcode is designed, which is composed of center encoding area and surrounding encoding area. The overall information capacity of the barcode is increased obviously. Based on the pattern encoding method of visual 2D barcode, pattern encoding-oriented error diffusion is proposed to remain the base image resolution. Experimental results show that the generated barcode not only has better visual quality, but also has larger capacity.
