With the advancement of the eighth reformation of elementary education inChina, more and more attentions are paid to assessment of students. Sinceconventional assessments are mainly based on teachers and educational departments,students' academic credits are considered as the main standard, and functions ofdiscrimination and selection are extremely emphasized, disadvantages exposing tosuch assessments affect the development of present quality-oriented education. BasicEducation Reform Program issued by Ministry of Education of the state has putforward such requirements as "establishing a sound system of assessments ofconforming to quality-oriented education, promoting students' all arounddevelopments; discovering and developing student's extensive potentials; helpingstudents' recognizing themselves and strengthening confidence; exerting educationalfunction of assessments; promoting student's further development." Theserequirements make us positively implement the spirit of new curriculum reform,setting up new concept of assessments and standard, and meeting the demand of newcurriculum reform and quality-oriented education. Performance assessment has beennewly advocated in international education circles. It puts emphasis upon the fact thatstudents should be good at useful knowledge and skills, and handle practical andcomplicate problems of recognition and life. This idea not only represents thetendency of development of assessment, but also dovetails basic education reform.This dissertation is made up of three parts besides introduction:The first part mainly analyzes and probes into the theory of performance assessments. Taking multi-intelligence and constructivism as theoretical support, thispaper emphatically discusses connotation of performance assessments, itsdevelopment, its main characteristics and its task, which offer a theoretical foundationfor practice of performance assessments in the second part.In the second part, the author of this dissertation makes a survey on teachers,students, school leaders and students' parents by means of questionnaires andinterviews as well as taking teachers and students as central respondents. The articlecomprehensively understands performance assessments in practice, and analyzes theexistent problems and its causes of performance assessments in practice by basicunderstanding of performance assessments and assessment standard, design ofperformance and feedback of performance assessments.In the third part of this dissertation, the author puts forward certain strategies andsuggestions of effectively implementing performance assessments according to theexistent problems of performance assessments in practice and its causes.
