The new National Standard for English Curriculum has stated that aim of junior English is to inspire students'interests in learning English; to master skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing; to use English correctly. Improving students'communicative competence in English is so much stressed in English teaching. Communicative Language Teaching regards the contents of language as the center of language teaching, not the structures. Communicative Competence is the core of English Communicative teaching. Communicative Competence is the ability to use language properly. The notion of communicative competence first introduced by Dell Hymes(1972), it is contrast to Chomsky's (1965) notion of competence. During the late 1980s and the early 1990s, Communicative Language Teaching has developed greatly in China. During the same period, Communicative Language Teaching had great impact on the foreign language teaching in China.Communicative Language Teaching isn't a pure and stable teaching model; its core is"using language to learn"and"learning to use language", not"learning language"or"learning about language". This thesis is just talking about developing students'communicative competence through applying communicative activities.First of all, the writer presents the background , focus and significance of this study. Secondly, the writer gives a literature review. In this part, the writer introduces the background of CLT, the development of CLT and the characteristics of CLT. The writer also talks about communicative competence and communicative activities. Thirdly, the writer talks about developing students'communicative competence through applying communicative activities in class. First, present some important ingredients for successful communicative activities. Then, show some major useful classroom communicative activities with examples in teaching practice. And complete some effective communicative activities out of class. At last, use a case study on CLT to discuss the feasibility of developing students'communicative competence.In English teaching, the teachers should integrate other methods on the basis of Communicative Language Teaching, so it can motivate students to become the core of teaching activities, and promote the development of students'communicative competence.
