With the development of society, people have a growing respect for education. As an integral part of education, English education of senior high school has received much attention at the present day when education is popularized and international exchanges are increasingly frequent. English, as an important communicative language, has been playing an increasingly important role in every field. At present, English listening teaching in senior high school and its teaching method have become more important to improve students' competence of English language. In a mode of teacher-led, student-centered, activity-mediated, the activity approach enables students to more effectively acquire knowledge and skills of English language so as to achieve the objective of English teaching of senior high school. Based on the "activity instruction theory" and the experimental research which seeks for the effective pathway that "activity instruction theory" is applied in English listening teaching of senior high school, this paper will explore the main function of "activity", and attempt to change the present inefficient situation of English listening teaching of senior high school in order to improve the quality of English teaching.The author chooses two parallel classes (They are in the same level of English learning before the experiment) of Grade One in Nanbu Middle School of Sichuan Province as the subject of research. The one is experimental class and the other is comparing class. As for the experimental class, "activity instruction theory" is adopted to perform one-term English listening teaching practice, for checking efficient application of "activity instruction theory" in English listening teaching in senior high school by the comparing and analyzing the scores in the term tests of English listening lesson between experimental class and comparing class. And the result indicates that "activity instruction theory" is applicable to English listening teaching in senior high school, and "activity instruction theory" can not only improve the abilities of learner's listening comprehension, but also promote learner's enthusiasm in English learning. At last, the author puts forward some suggestions summarized in the research, and the author hopes that it can help English teachers more efficiently apply the "activity instruction theory" in the English listening teaching of senior high school.This paper is composed of six parts.The first part of the thesis is an introduction to the thesis, which briefly presents the background and significance of the research as well as the content of each chapter. The second part is the literature review of activity teaching and listening teaching. First, it brings out the basic theory of activity teaching. Then, the definitions and a history of activity teaching both at home and abroad are explained. Last, the author summarizes the basic theory and importance of listening teaching.The third part of the thesis presents the research model and the design of the empirical research which includes the purpose, subjects, and instrument, procedure and software utilized in the data analysis.The fourth part analyzes the present situation of teaching and the empirical comparison. The data of investigation are analyzed by using frequency analysis statistics of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS V7.0). The results are discussed as well in this part.The fifth gives some pedagogical suggestions to teachers and students starting form the results of the research.The sixth part is the conclusion of the thesis. It presents the major findings of this research, and gives a conclusive remark about limitations and recommendations for future research.
