At present, cooperative learning is one of new methods advocated by new curriculum reform of foundation education in China. National Standards of English Course clearly states: the focus of English course reform is to change the situation of putting more emphasis on grammar and lexical explanations, and to enhance the student's ability of using language in practice. Classroom teaching should base on student's learning interest, experiences and cognitive level. The reform advocates experience, practice, participation, collaborative and communicative learning style, aiming at improving student's comprehensive activities.This paper takes Xinxiang No.2 Middle School for example and proceeds with the reality of English classroom and the basis of educational theory of cooperative learning, describing the current research situation at home and abroad and the meaning of cooperative learning and theoretical basis. In the study design, the author puts forward the following questions: What are the attitudes of the students towards group cooperative learning? What are the advantages of group cooperative learning compared to traditional teaching methods and the limitations of group cooperative learning in classroom practice. The author uses the methods of questionnaires, interviews and classroom observation to investigate and study the status of application of cooperative learning methods. The results show that the students like group cooperative learning style. It also shows that cooperative learning has a significant effect on improving students'interest and initiative of learning, improving their oral English ability, cultivating their capacity for cooperation and competition, and improving their ability of creative thinking and examination score. At the same time, the survey also finds that cooperative learning has some problems in the actual teaching progress, such as the task design, group distribution, and classroom discipline problem. If these issues are not properly handled, the effect of cooperative learning will be affected. At last, the author gives some teaching suggestions and hopes the research can be continued and perfected in the future teaching practice, so as to have a good direction on English teaching.
