Students nowadays shall be cultivated into lifelong learners to adjust themselves to the times of knowledge economy. In the past three decades, "learning autonomy" is increasingly attracting the attention of contemporary educators, who have realized that only by enabling learners to gain learning autonomy can they reach the main goal of education:to be life-long learners.Language acquisition depends on a mass of reading. It is found that a large amount of reading is beneficial to the improvement of second language proficiency. Extracurricular reading, as an extension of classroom teaching, can provide comprehensible input and enhance learners' general language competence. Based on the theory of humanism and meto-recognitive, this paper is a quasi-experimental study of a term extracurricular reading program, with the aim to know about the current situation of senior high students'learning autonomy, identify students'autonomous problems. Some ways "are put forward to improve their self-reading ability, to enhance their confidence in reading.110 students of senior one in Nanjing Qinghai High School are invited to participate in the study. The questionnaire consists of 50 statements and covers six aspects:English reading interests and motivation, setting up reading goals and plans, attribution, resources utilization, English reading strategy, monitor for the reading process and evaluation of the reading result. It is found that countermeasures for the factors that affect autonomous reading. The cultivation of students' autonomous reading can not only improve their reading abilities but also arouse their motivation of English learning. The students learn the language and the learning methods as well, which can benefit them for life long. Their self-learning ability has great impact on their scores. Therefore, importance should be attached to reading to help them master autonomous learning strategies and the psychological factors of the reading. In addition, various checking system should be set up to ensure their learning.It is hoped that the present research findings will give a hand to the teachers and students who want to train and form good autonomous leaning habits and good reading abilities, especially to the students who are lacking in learning strategies.
